Things You Did Not Know About Hazell Dean
Did you know Hazells first show as Hazell Dean was in 1977, with “The Hazell Dean Band” as the fresh faced support act for “The New Seekers” (obviously I was a child star!!!) Check out Hazell on YouTube, singing at The Royal Albert Hall, in Song for Europe 1976, singing “Couldn’t live without you for a day”. Brotherhood of Man won that year, and went on to win The Eurovision song contest. youtube Song For Europe 1976
Hazell supported Frankie Laine at The Victoria Palace, London, 1977 (a busy year for a child star!)
Hazell was managed by the late Victor Billings, who also managed Dusty Springfield and Kiki Dee.
Victor introduced Hazell to “all things camp”…and she’s never been the same since!
Dusty and Grace Jones, both came to see Hazell perform at “The Probe” in L.A. 1984 Both of who were lovely, and we had a great time after the show. Trying to locate the photo’s – somewhere in the loft!!!
Hazell and her then manager, Meg, introduced Dusty to Pete Waterman, who was desperate to record with her…Dusty decided to record on Peter Stringfellows label instead.
Grace Jones, far from being a terrifying amazon, came to the rescue, and loaned Hazell her microphone due to a technical hitch…Thanks Grace!!!
Hazell first met, Madame Rouge…Sharon Redd, in 1983, when “Searchin” was first released. Hazell went to see Sharon perform and a Cuban club in Miami. Sharon, unlike Grace, was terrifying. After Sharon’s set, the audience didn’t clap!! However the following week….Sharon then came to see Hazell sing at the same club….Sharon convinced Hazell was “White Trash who couldn’t sing” set about to intimidate. Unlike Sharon’s disastrous show of the previous week, the crowd went crazy, Sharon had to admit “Miss White Trash” could indeed sing…and a beautiful friendship began, between “Madam Rouge and Miss Thang”.
Hazell would often be summoned to Heathrow by Madam Rouge and her requests of “would you come pick me up in your big white carrrrrrrrrrr??” Their friendship lasted until Sharon passed away; in fact she was staying with Hazell only a week before she died. Hazell, sang Sharon’s “In the name of Love” at a tribute at The Fridge, Brixton – the only song Hazell would dearly love to cover.
Hazell went to Paul McCartney’s annual “Buddy Holly” birthday party – there is photographic evidence, and ate Linda’s organic veggie sausages!
Hazell has sung at Prides around the world…New York, Paris, Berlin…..but Sydney, where is my invite??????
Hazell's Favourite Films are in no specific order "Titanic" ** "Steel Magnolia's" "Boys On The Side" "The Poseidon Adventure" ** original "Brief Encounter" "Fried Green Tomato's" "Beaches" "A Star Is Born" Streisand version ** Wonder if Hazell got nervous working on the Cruise Ships ?????
Did you know that Hazell was once spelt with one "L" but changed it as a Numerologist predicted 2 "L's" would prove lucky. Hazell's stage name was almost "Jessie Miller". Her mum said "I will never call you Jessie". So she kept her real name, Hazell.
Hazell's first band was called "THE VANDALS". She played guitar and sang. She was 13 years old. Hazell Can Play the drums (really well) guitar and keyboards.
The first single Hazell ever bought was "The Seekers"-"The Carnival Is Over.
The first album Hazell ever bought was "Cilla" by Cilla Black. Hazell's first car - a yellow Ford Escort, AKA "The Yellow Peril".
Hazell sang at the legendary New York Club "Studio 54". She also asked Grace Jones to leave her dressing room - Grace Did !! They worked together several times after that incident, quite happily!
Hazell sang in Big Bands and was often a singer on "Come Dancing".
Hazell worked with Elaine Page on the BBC show "One More Time" and was working with her when she landed the role of EVITA.
Hazell was in one of the "The Pink Panther" movies as an extra, playing a violin in the orchestra.
She sang on a "Ski" yogurt advert. She also sang a Christmas jingle for "Woolworths"!
Hazell has done backing vocals in Eurovision twice, for "Sweet Dreams" and "Samantha Janus". She has been in Song For Europe twice! 1976 & 1984.
Did you know "Searchin" was originlly released in 1983 - Had she won The Song For Europe in 1984 , "Searchin" would never have been re-released !! Thank heavens "Belle and the Devotions" won that year!!
Keep an eye on this page as Hazell reveals more ....if her memory allows!
